Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men (Canterbury Branch)

40 members attended a “Social” Lunch at the Canterbury Golf Club in mid-february. The weather was decidedly Spring like and the views from the dining room could have encouraged us to take to the golf course ourselves, but instead we watched other valiant golfers completing their rounds. The meal was delicious and the staff gave us a warm welcome, so we all enjoyed the chance to chat to old friends and acquaintances at leisure. Committee member George Metcalfe took the opportunity of circulating among the members, finding out what they really like about the Association, so that we can try to reflect their wishes in future programmes. At present we offer a mix of meals, outings, and informative/entertaining talks, something for everyone, but focusing mainly on the County of Kent. Our next event, however, is a day trip by coach to Westminster Dyslexia Drop-in, East Kent

Unfortunately, last month’s meeting was cancelled due to bad weather, but there will be a warm welcome for everyone at the next Dyslexia Drop-in on Saturday March 2, 2-4pm, Canterbury Dyslexia Centre, The Clock Tower, 9 Tyler Hill, Blean, Canterbury CT2 9HP. Membership and booking are not necessary, all are welcome and there is no charge. Visitors can talk to specialist Dyslexia teachers about any concerns they may have and browse through the resources. Members may also borrow books and games from the specialist library of over 1,000 books. Dyslexia East Kent Support is a local group set up to provide information and support to people of all ages with dyslexia. Information and resources are available to enable them to reach their full potential. DEKS team of specialist advisors can guide people to find the information they need and support them to access further resources. Meetings are held on the first Saturday of the month in term time. There will not be a meeting in April. Further details can be found on the DEKS website, www.dyslexia-east-kent. org.uk The website also has a page for young people, ‘DEKS KIDS’, with links to some great websites designed for young people, such as www.funbrain.com and www. homeworkelephant.co.uk For more information, or if you are concerned about other family members who may have dyslexia, call 0845 0038 979 or email dyslexiaeastkent@gmail.com
