SPORT STARTS HERE One-point win earns final place Indoor bowls

Oyster Indoor Bowls Club’s ladies secured their place in the final of the Vivienne Cup with a slim victory against Dorchester at Basingstok­e’s Loddon Vale. A tight contest ended 74-73 as Oyster set up a meeting with Colchester in Nottingham on April 15. Doreen Masters, Sylvia Whiting and Jacqueline Harvey played a defining role in the triumph, winning their rink 14-9 to compensate for the 20-24 deficit suffered by the trio of Yvonne Mann, Carole Nelson and Karen Bishop. Lin Riches, Diana Whybrow and Dot Morris saw their rink finish 23-23, while Rita Marsh, Ruth Emert and Pam Dennett endured a similar fate as their match-up ended 17-17. Oyster’s ladies were in dominant form in their Kent League meeting with White Oak, surrenderi­ng just one rink and drawing another on their way to a 143-94 win and 8.5 points. Ann Moon, Joyce Whitlock, Barbara Grundy and Yvonne Gambrill were the pick of the side on the day as they beat their opponents by a 34-6 margin. The club’s score was also hoisted by the the 36-13 scoreline of Freda Clee, Whybrow, Sue Close and Chris Benneworth, not to mention Shirley Fey, Beverley Cork, Sylvia Sweeting, Jan Allen’s 23-16 victory. There was, meanwhile, a defeat for Oyster’s men at the hands of Deangate Ridge, with a 89-87 margin seeing them garner just 2.5 points in their Kent League clash. Mervyn Gulvin, Paul Drane, Phil Scott-martin and John Day were one of two successful rinks, edging to a 15-14 victory. Keith Dennett, Malcolm Price, Carl Akers and Alan Cornfoot marked the other in a 21-9 win. Defeats in three other rinks and an 18-18 draw, however, proved enough to hand Deangate the points. Oyster rounded off the week with a win, overcoming Whitstable outdoor club 157134 in a friendly between the counterpar­ts. They claimed five of the eight rinks, including a 31-15 win for Peter Tavener, Alison Mcdonald, Keith Dellard and Vicky Lewis. Joy Moran, Michael Lloyd, Janet Gray and Chris Hutchings edged home, 18-17.
