Canterbury Photographic Society Members were honoured to have Premier Judge Kirsty Ralfs cast her experienced eye over the club’s Annual Print Panel Competition. Each of the 24 panels submitted consisted of three images which were to form a cohesive forth image when viewed together. Kirsty offered very valuable critique in the form of praise and constructive advice to members and added a great sense of humour to the evening. It was good experience for those considering distinctions with the Royal Photographic Society when 10 or more images are required to complete a panel. Sarah Vinall was the overall winner with a beautiful creative panel titled ‘A Touch of Nature’ and she was presented with a shield to keep for one year. Kirsty also awarded 4 Highly Commended certificates. Steve Presnell for ‘Flow’ Wendy Kennett for ‘Nymphs in the Moonlight’ and Bill Grinney was awarded 2 Highly Commended certificates for ‘Lunch Time’ and ‘Two Strikes One Down’. The next meeting will be a digital projected image competition with the set subject ‘Rain’. New members and guests are always very welcome to come along to the meetings. For more details of our programme and events please visit www. canterburyphotographicsociety. com or phone Wendy Kennett 07540 519182.

Herne Bay Historical Records Society Mike Bundock, chairman, gave a very interesting and comprehensive illustrated talk at our last meeting which concentrated on the description of everyday life in Herne Bay during the Victorian era. Through the use of excellent images he was able to describe the shops Victorian residents would have used, their various modes of transport well before the introduction of motor cars as well as many aspects of their domestic life and use of their leisure time including local entertainments, such as the early cinema visiting military bands and seasonal concert parties. Another special part of the evening was the presentation to Mike Bundock by Martin Blatt Chairman of Herne Bay Allotments Association of the results of a photographic project which had been undertaken by some of their members involving the recording of over 1100 digital images of many aspects of life in Herne Bay taken as a snapshot during 2018. Mike thanked Martin for the donation and said that these would prove to be a valuable asset to the society’s archive for the use of future generations. Our next meeting will be at the Lower Hall United Church, High Street, Herne Bay CT6 6NG (next door to the Fire Station), Thursday March 7 when Margaret Burns will be giving an illustrated talk on The Modern History of Studd Hill. Doors open, 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Members free, visitors £2.50. For more details contact heritagecentrehbhrs@gmail.com

Herne Bay Photographic Club We welcomed Isle of Thanet Photographic Society to the club this week for a friendly, interclub battle. This is the first time we have met, and it was great to have so many of their members come along. The competition was split into two sections, print and digital, with each club providing 0 images in each section, and there was no set subject. Our judge for the evening was Jack Taylor EFIAP DPAGB. Starting with the prints, Jack began by complementing both clubs on the quality of their images, and acknowledging that it would be difficult to separate them when it came to the marking. Herne Bay’s two top-scoring images were “On a Breezy Day” by Clare Edmonds (which scored 20) and “Walk on By” by Steve Roberts (which scored 19). When the scores were added up, Isle of Thanet was just in the lead. After the break, Jack was presented with the digital images to critique and score. Unfortunately Herne Bay couldn’t make up the difference and Isle of Thanet were the victors. Well done to them, we look forward to meeting them again next year for a rematch. March 12, we have a critique evening for digital Reculver Beacon W.I Members met for the second time of the year and it was a great night. The talk was “A School Girls War by Mary Smith” very interesting and visual talk. To take part in ‘Show The Love’ members made hearts for their competition and the winner was Jean Raines. Next month the ladies will be making an egg cosy. Should you wish to have more information please contact Secretary Claire Hallett 07718 772238.
