Canterbury Golf club’s ladies got their week of action under way last Wednesday with a friendly team competition. Treasurer Diane Florence and her team emerged victors from their match-up with honorary secretary Judith Jefferson and her group. The matchplay format clash ended 7½-5½ in what proved a successful event, topped by timely February sunshine. Maxine Field marked the turn of the month by winning the March medal with a net score of 79, beating Cath Smith’s net total of 80 and Elizabeth Berry’s net 82. Sunday saw the first knockout round of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition between the Canterbury pairing of Berry and Claire Wilson and Westgate and Birchington’s Gill Palin and Maz Greenin. The Canterbury pair claimed a 3-and-2 win amid stormy conditions to book their spot in the next round of the competition. n Last week we wrote that Canterbury ladies’ section had beaten the club’s seniors 5-1 in a greensomes matchplay event. The result was actually in favour of the seniors – we apologise for the error. n Depleted numbers made for a quiet start to February for Whitstable & Seasalter Golf Club’s ladies. Louise Tucker opened the month by winning the 18 hole Stableford with 32 points ahead of Helen Foad’s 29 points in second and Stella Larkin’s 27 in third. Sue Goodall meanwhile claimed the nine-hole version with 14 points to edge out the 13 put up by Fran Price and Joyce Jaynes’ 12 points. Mid-february saw a rare sight of sunshine overlook the drawn threes team Stableford, which was won by the trio of Janet Henley, Pat Bensted and Stella Lakin – the former of whom recorded the top individual score on the day with 31. Eight pars later helped Holly Butler to a winning score of 33 points in the 18-hole Stableford, one better than Jean Hudson’s 32 and three ahead of Millie Tucker, who is the club’s youngest lady member. Goodall came out on top again in the nine-hole contest with 14 points, while Lynne Hollands was awarded second on count back from Margaret Barker. The month finished with Sue Pout winning the 18-hole Stableford with 35 points upon her return from a break, with Butler second and Tucker third. Fran Price went on to win the nine-hole competition with 18 points to top Madge Harris and Goodall. n Water hazards and unpleasant rough awaited St Stephen’s Golf Society on their first visit to Littlestone Warren GC. New member and novice golfer Peter Talbot flourished on a tricky course to finish with 45 points and get off the mark with his first win for St Stephen’s. He was followed closely by Howard Turbitt’s 42 points in second and Alex Mcbeth’s third-placed 40 points. Paul Rayner and Pat Dawkins claimed the prizes in the nearest the pin competitions, while Ian Jackson emerged victor in the approach shot competition as well as taking home the twos club pot totalling to upwards of £30. The club’s next event takes place at West Malling on Saturday, March 30. Nabi has also made 68 T20 International appearances, and boasts a T20I bowling average of just 24.71 with an economy rate of 7.14. He also boasts an impressive batting strike rate of 145.12. Nabi, whose signing is subject to regulatory approval – said: “I’m very pleased to be joining Kent as I have heard good things about the club. “Wherever I play, I always want my team to be successful and I hope I can contribute to wins at this famous county.” Kent’s director of cricket, Paul Downton, added: “We are thrilled to have beaten several other counties to sign Nabi for our Vitality Blast campaign. “He has been an outstanding performer in T20 International cricket as well the global T20 competitions for a number of years. “He is a proven match-winner capable of taking the game away from teams with both bat and ball, making him an exciting addition to our squad this year.”
