Today, Rose Lane contains no buildings of pre-war date, and it is easy to assume that The Blitz was responsible for all the destruction. While bombs levelled much of this once narrow, twisting lane, there were a number of old structures that survived into the 1960s, particularly at the lane’s Watling Street end. The first picture features the premises of greengrocers, H.S Brewer & Son, taken in February, 1962 which stood on the western corner of the junction with Watling Street (left). The property’s stuccoed Regency-period façade may have hidden an earlier structure. Indeed, the un-rendered wall, seen on the right, dates from the early 17th century and forms part of the perimeter wall that once encircled a large Jacobean period house fronting Watling Street. This house, once the residence of the Mann family, survives today as a solicitor’s office. Brewer’s corner shop was pulled down in 1962, shortly after the first photo was taken, as part of the widening of Rose Lane. Other old properties perished on the opposite corner of Rose Lane, for the same purpose. The second picture, from the early 1970s, sees a widened Rose Lane from the vantage point of the then-recently completed multi-storey car park. The aforementioned Jacobean house is now much more in evidence and the site of the lost corner shop is occupied by a widened pavement and strip of grass. Note the overgrown back garden of the old house. In the mid 1980s, this would give way to a row of offices and shops, as part of the Marlowe Arcade development.
