TWO GOALS FROM BARNES PAVE THE WAY TO FINAL

-

Canterbury ladies’ over-35s added a final at Lee Valley to their calendar with a 5-1 win over Bowdon at the weekend. Lucy Barnes scored two in quick succession to give her side a healthy advantage, before the hosts found the net to get themselves back in the game. Nikki Triggs then converted her solo run to give Canterbury a 3-1 lead heading into the break. The visitors were forced to be more patient in their search for a fourth in the second half, until Moira Clewes deflected a cross goalbound. Canterbury then scored a fifth following a fine passing move to wrap up the victory. It proved another disappointing weekend for the ladies’ 1st team as they were beaten 2-0 by second-placed Surbiton in the Investec Premier League. They remain bottom on five points and still in search of their first win this season. Canterbury 2As lost 6-1 to Upminster, Gemma Luckhurst grabbing their only goal. They must now win their remaining two league games to avoid relegation. The ladies’ 3rds came from behind to earn a 5-3 win at Bromley & Beckenham to move two points behind seventh- placed Gravesend 1sts. Having conceded early on, Canterbury capped a good spell of attacking play to draw level through Sue Spight from a short corner. Alice Dunn scored again to give her side the lead at half-time, before the hosts responded with two goals of their own. Mel Lea added another shortly after, before two further goals secured the points for Canterbury. The 3As also registered a 2-2 draw with third-placed Tunbridge Wells to stay above the top three in Division 2, responding with two secondhalf goals.
