Winger’s in the know

Getting to Wembley would be a once-in-alifetime opportunity for most non-league players – but not Canterbury’s Kyron Lightfoot. The 20-year-old winger played there as a youngster and now has the chance to go back in a major cup final. Lightfoot said: “I was lucky enough to play there when it first opened. I played for Faversham Strike Force and they won a competition. “It was only a 10-minute game, just when the pitch opened, but this time it would be 11-a-side with all my family there. “I was only six or seven so going back as a 20-yearold, you can’t even dream of it. Stuff like this doesn’t happen to everybody.” Lightfoot began the season with Ramsgate in Bostik South East but dropped down a level to get more game time. “It’s great here, especially as a young player,” he said. “I’m only 20 so being around players that have been in the semi-finals before, I’m just soaking it all up. “The experienced players expect a lot, which is good for my development. It’s a real learning curve.” Lightfoot’s a tricky winger whose game is all about taking on defenders and creating chances. Away from the pitch he’s in the last year of a sport and exercise science degree at university. Lightfoot said: “It’s stressful with a dissertation and it’s hard to keep focused when I’ve got all of this going on as well. “Coming here and enjoying it with the lads is like a release instead of sitting at a laptop in the library all day.”
