Tyler Hill

Correspondent: Penny Whiting, 61 Hackington Road, Tyler Hill, Canterbury, CT2 9NE Tel: 01227 471566 robinwhitingoftyler@hotmail.com Hackington Parish Council: The Annual Parish Assembly was held on Thursday March 14 in the memorial hall. The meeting was first addressed by Paul Leary, Highways officer from KCC, who gave an update on the recent survey carried out on the traffic flow on Canterbury Hill. Following questions from the councillors, the many residents who had attended, were asked to voice their concerns, through the Chairman. There were many of these and they inevitably included other stretches of the main road through the village especially relating to speed at quiet times and inconsiderate parking. It became obvious that apart from the aggravation caused by the speed and constant flow of traffic through the village, there are thought to be serious risks to pedestrians. After spending 45 minutes on the subject the Chairman, Ray Evison, had to call a halt and continue with the agenda of the scheduled meeting. The majority of the public left the room at this stage, clearly frustrated with the apparent inability of the parish council to resolve the very real health and safety concerns that the majority of residents have, regarding the road through the village, which is neither an A nor a B road and has the lowly status of a country lane. Thanks were recorded to Robin Whiting for continuing to receive and distribute the Neighbourhood Watch reports and to the many people who garden some of the green spaces and plant up tubs to give pleasure to all in the village or passing through. Councillor Ben Fitter-harding was also thanked for his contribution, because he will be standing down as a Hackington Parish Councillor, as he no longer lives in the area. A meeting of the Parish Council followed but was fairly brief because everything had already been covered. It was confirmed in the Highways report that the Canterbury City Council have approved a ban on pavement parking on both sides of a length of Hackington Road and it was perhaps a little unfortunate that the majority of local residents did not stay at the meeting long enough to hear this important news, which will go some way towards improving pedestrian safety. Quiz: Saturday April 6, Tyler Hill Memorial Hall. Tables of 8, £8 a head to include soft drinks and snacks. Please brink own glasses, drinks and food if required. Time is 7 for prompt 7.30pm start. Please apply to correspondent as above. All proceeds to Blean Church funds.

Canterbury Photographic Society Guest Judge Kevin Bell was invited to judge the 4th Projected Digital Images League competition at last week’s meeting. Members were asked to submit images into the set subject category ‘Rain’ and also the usual ‘Open’ section where anything can be entered. ‘Rain’ is not quite as straight-forward a category as one might think for a variety of different images for Kevin to comment on and offer suggestions for improvement. Indeed, a few entries had a very similar idea of a blurred object behind a window pane with rain drops in sharp focus, so the unusual task of having to compare nuances between them came into play giving our judge a challenge. He awarded 1st place in the set subject to Phil Grosvenor for his image ‘Purple Rain’, his first ever competition win, scoring 20 points, closely followed by Philip Wells for ‘Red Flower Through Rainy Window’ and Lyn Gregory with ‘Heading Home’ each scoring 19 points and a ‘Highly Commended’ award. Wendy Kennett and Pete Smith also received Highly Commended awards for their images ‘It’ll Pass’ and ‘A Rainy Day At Grasstrack’ respectively, both earning 18 points apiece. The open section was won by Lyn Gregory for her image ‘Light And Mist’ and Steve Presnell also achieved 20 points for ‘Branching Out’ and a Highly Commended award. Certificates were also awarded to Jon Strange for his Highly Commended ‘Ellie’, and Bill Grinney for ‘Close Encounter’, being awarded 19 and 18 points respectively. March 27, we will be hosting a talk ‘A Moment Captured’ from guest speaker Shirley Hollis. Non members are very welcome to attend, £3. Guest talks are very helpful and inspirational for budding photographers of all levels of experience. April 10, guest judge June Sharpe will be casting her eye over our member’s Print Competition entries, the theme being ‘Monochrome Historic Canterbury’. It is an ideal opportunity for people to come along and see a variety of our member’s work printed and displayed and hear the critique on each image, with the added bonus of seeing local landmarks, possibly in new artistic ways. The judge’s comments and constructive critique help the members to improve their images either in using the camera or in post processing. The group meets Wednesday evenings, Tyler Hill memorial hall. For more information please visit our website canterburyphotographicsociety. com or phone Wendy Kennett 07540 519182. Gardeners’ Club Forty members attended the March meeting of the Painters Forstal Gardeners Club and were treated to a highly educational presentation from Kevin Tooher helping us understand the complex subject of plant names. Our thanks to Kevin for visiting our club again and sharing such breadth of knowledge. The next club meeting is in fact the Spring Show, Saturday April 6, Lorenden School hall in Painters Forstal. Please check your show schedules carefully for staging times. Stewards will be on hand to help you stage, if necessary, and new members please have a go. The season is a challenge but there is always something to show so come along and have a go. Don’t forget the culinary classes. Also the photographic class which this year is entitled ‘Clouds’. Plug plants to grow on for the Summer Show will be available for collection at the Spring Show. The Show will be open for public viewing from 2.30-3.30pm. We are proud to say that several members will be opening their gardens in the National Garden Scheme this year so check out the ‘yellow book’ for locations and dates. More information regarding these gardens will be placed on the club website. The club outing to RHS Hyde Hall in June is proving to be very popular so don’t leave it too long before you secure your place on the coach. There is soon to be a monthly ‘blog’ on the club website so keep an eye out for this new article. www. paintersforstalgardenersclub.org. uk

Inner Wheel Club of Canterbury At the Club’s annual Interclub lunch held at the Cricket Ground, attended by more than 100 Inner Wheel members from the South East area, the speaker, David Newsholme, founder and director of the Canterbury Cathedral Girls Choir, gave a talk on the development of the choir since it’s foundation in 2014. The choir is composed of about 25 girls from 12-18 years old from a variety of schools in the Canterbury area, chosen by audition. They have grown from strength to strength and sang at Archbishop Welby’s first Christmas in Canterbury as well as appearing in a BBC series on the life of the Cathedral. They have also recorded a DVD and performed with world class ensembles.

Potterers Cycling Club Meet us for a lunchtime drink. This is not an organised cycle Rough Common and Harbledown Gardeners’ Association Thursday March 7, Ann Chadwick welcomed members to her first meeting as Chairman of the Gardeners’ Association. She introduced Mary Cooke as the new minute secretary who will be assisted by her husband Anthony in this post for the rest of the year. The committee will organise its own meeting procedures this year. The speaker, Mick Lynn, was introduced and he gave a most interesting and informative talk about bees which he illustrated with slides. After donning his white bee protective suit he brought out jars of honey and reminded us that bees are also great pollinators and important to gardeners. The vote of thanks was given by Sandy Stokes. After refreshments the minutes of the February meeting were read out by the secretary and then the treasurer, Ann Richards, gave her report. The chairman reminded members that as May 2 was election day the hall would be unavailable for that month’s meeting and a trip out to a nursery would probably be the alternative as shown in the programme. She read out the results of the monthly competitions. Top scorers in each section were: flower of the month 10 points for Ann Chadwick’s white Christmas Rose; potted plant 10 points to Anthony Cooke for his large Kafta Lilies; made or grown at home 10 points to Faye Macintosh for her flower arrangement and 10 points for Liz Anderson’s pastel picture of a dog’s head. Jean Byers gave 10 gardening tips for March. The raffle prizes were distributed by Ann Overy. The next meeting, Thursday April 4, 7.30pm, Rough Common village hall. It differs from that shown in the original programme. It is a talk by Christine Bartlett entitled “Beginner Orchids- care and cultivation.” Visitors and new members are very welcome. More details from the chairman 01227 766608.
