Trophy campaign begins with narrow victory

Canterbury ladies launched their challenge in this year’s Pearson Trophy with a slender home win over Birchwood Park.

The city club edged home 4-3 with one of the games having to go to the 20th hole before it was decided. The Canterbury team comprised Amanda Pilbeam, Alyson Wreford, Sarah Wetherell, Diane Plommer, Andra Barney, Sue Jones and Christine Bowles They are next in action away to Redlibbets, New Ash Green.

Nine teams played in the annual Ladies versus Seniors match at Canterbury.

Lady captain Fran Fearn and Diane Florence led the way, taking on Ian Florence and Neil Parsonson, deputising for Bruce Maguire who was unable to play.

It was an excellent day enjoyed by all but especially the ladies who triumphed 6-3.

Next year’s matches will take place under the captaincy of Sarah Wetherell and Neil Parsonson.

■ The monthly medal attracted a 20-strong entry and although it was a lovely sunny day conditions were testing.

The overall winner with a net 77, three ahead of the field, was Claire Wilson. Cath Smith was runner-up with Christine Bowles in third on 83.

The nine-hole competitio­n played on the same day saw three ladies close on 13 points. However, it was Sue Kerr who took the prize, with Margaret Elderson in second and Anne Ghazi in third.

■ The latest round of the ladies’ winter league competitio­n produced a win for Ali Doyle and Claire Wilson, whose 36-point total put them four ahead of Jacklyn Barons and Alison Kingston.

Cath Smith and Elizabeth Carlotti (29) were third of the six teams who played as a greensomes Stableford. There are three rounds still to play.
