Dad Sheldon shines to keep sons in their place

Canterbury GC round-up

-

Levi Johnson shot five birdies on the front nine as he and Simon Leggatt took over at the top of Canterbury GC’S Hallet Cup winter league.

The pair finished fourth in Sunday’s fourth round. Sheldon Fagg (h14) was just happy to put his three sons in their place with partner Alan Bundock (h8), as they took the round win with 45 Stableford points from a 9/10ths handicap allowance in a field of 58 pairs, to move from 12th to 5th in the table.

Scratch handicap Johnson birdied the 1st, 4th and 7th, where Leggatt also had a four, plus the 8th and 9th holes as they chalked up a total of 55 league points to push Peter Hilden (14) and Liam Holland (7) into second place as they slipped to 21st place on Sunday. Both teams have 187 points but Johnson and Leggatt are top by virtue of their latest performance.

Fagg and Bundock beat Andrew Tague (h14) and Martin Wilson (h19) by a point on the day, with Jeremy Keeler (h9) and Graham Hunter (h20) third on countback after also scoring 44 Stableford points. The 58 league points the winners racked up were due reward for a solid team effort with Bundock making 27 of their points, boosted by birdies at the 1st, 3rd, 8th and 18th.

Fagg chipped in with 14 points alone from five holes, starting on the 9th with a three points par and with birdies at the 12th and 13th.

That left Fagg looking way down the league table to sons Owen (h5), who lies 32nd with partner Peter Bundock (h9); Harry (h5), who is 35th with Ash Iddenden (5); and Jack (h21), who is 44th with Geoff Plommer (h18).

Alan Bundock said: “The aim for Sheldon is to beat the boys. There’s definitely a bit of friendly family rivalry there. “I started and finished well and Sheldon came right into it in the middle of the round, especially with those two birdies.

“We dovetailed really well.’’ n Tony Wenham (h12) scored 34 points to win Monday’s Seniors Stableford by a point from Richard Young (h18), who saw off Brian Whybrow (h15) and fourth-placed David Gregory (h26) on countback. n Eighteen pairs took part in Canterbury’s annual Turkey Trot mixed foursomes Stableford. Defending champions Bert Whyte and Claire Wilson teamed up again to try to retain their title and after a fantastic front nine with 25 points knew they just had to keep it going to hopefully take home the prize. However, a reversal of fortune in the second half meant they only had 10 points on the back nine and had to settle for second on countback.

The winning pair, Neil Parsonson and Jacqui Mount, p r o d u c e d a muc h mor e consistent 18 holes, producing a front nine of 19 points and a back nine of 16 points to take home the first prize. Third were June Bevan and Billy Field who edged out Jacklyn Barons and next year’s captain John Shepherd on countback after both teams had scored 34.

The ladies’ December Medal took place with a reduced field due to the second leg of the Pearson Trophy, a county competition which saw nine ladies unavailable to play in the home competition.

The winner of the medal was next year’s lady vice captain Alyson Wreford with a net 81. Val Binns (82) was runner-up on 82, followed by next year’s lady captain Sarah Wetherell (90). The nine-hole competition was won by Susan Mulder with 16 points.

The team representing the club in the Pearson Trophy played away at Redlibbets Golf Club after having to postpone the match last week due to torrential rain.

The match was won by Canterbury 4-3 in a well fought match with one of the games having to go to the 19th hole to be decided.
