Gastropubs among best in Britain

-

Four Canterbury gastropubs have been ranked among the best in the country in a prestigious list - with one scooping second place.

The taverns were named in the annual Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub Awards, firmly establishing the district’s reputation as a foodie destination. The Sportsman in Seasalter was only narrowly beaten to first place by the London’s Harwood Arms.

Run by brothers Philip and Stephen Harris - the latter also the restaurant’s self-taught head chef - the Faversham Road pub has earned a multitude of accolades over the years, and held a Michelin star since 2008.

Having been named gastropub of the year five times, the Sportsman prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients such as oysters and fish from the Whitstable coast.

The Compasses Inn in Crundale came in at number six on the list, rising 15 places from last year’s ranking of 21. Hidden above the Downs, the Shepherd Neame inn is run by experienced husband-and-wife team Rob and Donna Taylor, who describe the eatery as a “muddy wellies and fine food kind of place”.

The Fordwich Arms near Canterbury also jumped a significant number of places this year - from 42nd to 17th. Boasting a 1930s bar and oak-panelled dining room with three open fires, the pub sits right on the Stour and enjoys a dining terrace and garden with views over the water.

The Dog at Wingham ranked 49th, while Tunbridge Wells’ The Kentish Hare came in at number 28.

More than 400 gastropub owners, food critics, chefs and industry experts voted to decide the top 50. Kent has the highest number, other than London.
