Liam Holland was full of praise for teammate Peter Hilden after they finished second in the sixth round of the Hallet Cup men’s winter league on Sunday, to close up behind leaders Levi Johnson and Simon Leggatt, with two rounds to go. A Stableford points total of 45 earned Holland (h7 from 9/10th allowance) and Hilden (h14) 57 WL points, putting them on 291, three behind Johnson (scr) and Leggatt (h5), who finished seventh with 42 points for 52 points.

Father and son pair Tony (h14) and 17-year-old Jonathan Warman (h7) won Sunday’s round with 45 points, easing Holland and Hilden into second place on countback.

Richard Beer (h5) and Mark Broadhurst (h5) took third place with 44. Johnson and Leggatt had the same points total as three other pairs in the field of 116 players and 58 teams, including fourth placed defending champions Dean Danton (scr) and Scott Williams (h10) but were pushed back into seventh on count back. Holland said: “It’s definitely not over yet. It’s close this year but we’ve got got to win at least one of the next two rounds to have a chance of catching them. “Peter played a blinder today, he carried me on the back nine and it’s the best I’ve seen him play in a couple of years.

It’s an exciting event and hopefully they’ll be a trophy at the end.’’ Hilden, who had a four points birdie on the 4th and seven pars worth three points apiece, was the major points scorer but Holland dovetailed well on the holes where Hilden failed to spark, including a birdie four at the long 7th for four points. Jonathan Warman fired two birdies in his contribution of 26 points, while dad Tony scored five three point pars in his 19 points as they scored a maximum haul of 58 WL points, moving them up from 23rd to 14th in the standings and wondering what might have been.

Tony said: “We missed the first round because we were looking around universities for Jon, got 57 league points for second place in the next round and then got disqualified in the third round because Jon forgot to hand the card in – but he certainly made amends today.” Colin Gellatly (h5) and Waldemar Kalinowski (h8) were sixth, in the group on 42 points, to move up to third in the table, nine points behind the leaders. 18 holes that morning. Seventeen ladies braved the elements with Caroline Collins taking first place with a net 75.

Val Binns was the runner-up, one point behind, while Claire Wilson finished third on 82.

Sue Jones (net 82) topped the second division followed by Sarah Wetherell (net 83) and Elizabeth Carlotti (net 84). Saturday saw the third round of the ladies’ winter league competition with six pairs taking part in a foursomes competition.

Jenny Rutherford and Catherine Hinds were first on 29 points, two clear of Elizabeth Berry and Jaqueline Mount. The next round is a greensomes competition and with only only one point separating the top four there is all to play for.

Canterbury ladies’ first weekend medal of the year had to be cancelled due to the weather which meant only 15 holes were open.

However, the nine ladies who were scheduled to play took part in a replacement fun team competition won by Val Binns, Jacqui Mount and Ali Ord. Last year’s lady captain and seniors captain, Fran Fearn and Bruce Maguire, along with some Canterbury GC supporters visited the RNLI station at Whitstable.

They were introduced to some of the RNLI volunteers and shown around the station before presenting the charity with a cheque for just over £7,000 that was raised by the club as one of the charities in 2019.
