Synergy are left in the red

Pilgrims Red were in full flow as they faced reigning Canterbury & District League champions Synergy on another morning of competitio­n, writes Lily Thompson.

Pilgrims got off to a fabulous start, attacking fast and defending with skill to keep a lead throughout the match. Synergy did well to narrow the gap in the second half, but they couldn’t quite catch their opponents who ran out 38-28 victors.

Awards for Pilgrims went to Lavinia Watts (Star Player and Best Defence) and Erica Aitken (Best Attack) and for Synergy Tash Wilkins was Star Player. Unicorns took on a strong Academy Red this week. Both teams played with speed and stamina but Academy had the edge and took control in the second half to emerge victorious 52-44.

Academy’s persistent and skilled attacks also earned them Best Attack (Rebecca Reynolds) and Star Player (Isla Graham). Unicorns’ Amy Burt and Natalie Bonneywell got Best Defence and Star Player respective­ly. Canterbury and Companion Care played out a tight match, Canterbury edging home 58-52. J&L saw off Oasis with a strong performanc­e, winning 58 goals to 32. Companion Care earned two points from their score and Oasis one. Division 2 saw Black Jacks face Back To’s in a closely contested match.

Black Jacks took the lead in the first quarter and managed to keep Back To’s at bay to win 28-22.

Hannah Frost (Back To’s) got Best Defence for her skill in the D and Teegan Percival (Back To’s) earned Star Player. Star Player and Best Attack went to Black Jacks (Lauren Diamond and Jo Quinn). Bluebirds added another victory to the list as they beat Pilgrims Open by an eight goal margin.

They took an early lead, helped by the strong defence of Best Defence Paige Fordham and the excellent control of Best Attack and Star Player Vicky Camburn. Katie Daughters (Pilgrims) got Star Player for her skill and stamina on court. The final score was 31-23.

Alpha dominated their match against Academy White, emerging triumphant 63-33. Wahl also controlled court, beating UKC 58-36.

Both Academy White and UKC got a point for their scores.
