Canterbury City’s joint-boss Josh Hall insists Saturday’s heavy defeat at home to Tunbridge Wells wasn’t a true reflection of the quality and potential in the side.

City, who slipped to 11th in Southern Counties East following the 5-0 loss, have won just two of their last nine games in the Premier Division and are now more than 20 points behind leaders Beckenham Town. However, Hall says he isn’t too troubled about recent performances, admitting building a successful team with promise remains his objective. “I would like to think the match was an off-day,” the former Sittingbourne coach said. “We always look to try and play football and be positive, but during the game I think we lost individual battles all over the pitch because it wasn’t a collective performance. “The positive for us is that the boys have already recognised their mistakes, and if they’re

A tough afternoon saw Canterbury City fall to a heavy home defeat to Tunbridge Wells.

The first attempt on goal in Saturday’s match came in the first minute when City’s Danny Keyte hoisted a volley over the Wells goal but it wasn’t long before the visitors drew first blood. A corner was sent in and, after some hesitancy in the City defence, Chris Lawal stooped to head past debutant keeper Mitchell Ware. doing that, then they’re willing to put it right – it’s not a case of what the hell happened, so I’m not worried.

“At the minute our goal as a club and as a squad is to have some excitement and promise in the team, and to build and sustain what we’ve got heading into next year. “Everybody wants to go as high as they can, but we can’t obviously do that in the space of a month or even two or three. “It’s a long-term process where we’re trying to create a platform for next season and beyond, hopefully getting this club in a much better position, so we just need to move forward and get up the league as quickly and as comfortably as we can. “We need to put in a good shift in training this week, knowing that Erith on Saturday are a good side who are going to give us a similar if not a better game than what Tunbridge Wells did at the weekend.”

Less than 48 hours before featuring in the weekend’s defeat against Tunbridge Wells, hometown midfielder Danny Keyte was announced as the club’s new captain.

The appointment is something Hall thinks will benefit the city club on and off the field moving forward.

“We both felt that Danny is at a good age with a great work ethic,” he added.

“He’s also good with the boys in the dressing room, so we just feel that if we have a captain that mirrors what we want then that’s what we’re trying to create and Danny ticks all the boxes.”
