Early advantage slips away

Oyster IBC ladies took on Folkestone twice in the Kent Indoor League, losing one match and winning the other.

In the first match each team won on three rinks, with the other rink a draw. However, Folkestone had the better overall score of 137-121, with the Oyster getting 3.5 points.

Rink scores: Pauline Hogston, Sheila Tibby, Barbara Grundy, Jan Allen lost 22-12; Maralyn Whamond, Diana Whybrow, Sylvia Sweeting, Sue Swan won 27-20; Maxine Probart, Chris Appleton, Chris Benneworth, Yvonne Gambrill drew 17-17; Madeline Mcconomy, Jacqueline Harvey, Penny Perkins, Janet Drewitt lost 24-13; Ann Moon, Marion Algar, Joyce Whitlock, Dawn Harris lost 21-10; Jan Turner, Caroline Jordan, Ruth Emert, Sheila Bartholome­w won 18-14; Shirley Fey, Janet Pamphilon, Carole Nelson, Maggie Dellard won 24-17.

The teams won two, lost two and drew two in the next match, but the Oyster won the contest overall, 115106, for seven points.

■the Boughton Acorns played their last game at home in Division 2 of the East Kent Short Mat Bowls League, collecting six points against Minster Monks.

Lesley Holmes, Mike Best and Bob Holliday won 18-6 on rink one, and there was a 17-9 victory for Nigel Dawkins, Peter Shead and Mick Nichol on rink two. In Division 3, Boughton Challenger­s also earned six points, from a home success in their game against Chislet Cheetahs. Neville Taylor, Karen Fletcher and Brian Peterson beat Lesley Eames, John Griffiths and Rick Eames 14-13, while Jan Weatherley, Bill Beacon and Roy Tamplin defeated Jackie Eliot,

Agnes Griffiths and Dave Eliot 23-4. Bouhgton’s Courtenays team lost at home to Canterbury Tales – 16-10 on rink one and 13-6 on rink two.

Also in Division 3 action, Chislet Labradors defeated Herne Bay Lancasters 27-23. Sue Clarke, Jim Bellingham and Jack Cramp won 10-9, while Wilf Laughton,mick Holmes and Jon Goddard triumphed 17-14.

Canterbury men’s 1sts were beaten 5-2 by Oxford Hawks in National Division 1 South.

They were twice ahead early on but conceded three goals in the second half and had goalkeeper Cade Banditt yellow carded before the end. Callum Brown-lea gave Canterbury the lead in the 17th minute and although the visitors conceded a goal four minutes later they retook the lead in the 28th minute through Louis Ridge.

However, they let the hosts back in again before half-time and Hawks took the lead soon after the break before adding two late goals. Canterbury 2nds were held 2-2 by the side just below them in South Premier Division 2 East, sixth-placed Blackheath & Elthamians. Jack Gooding and Zach Williams scored for Canterbury.

Kent-sussex Regional 2 leaders Canterbury Pilgrims made hard work of defeating basement side Folkestone 2nds, winning 2-1.

It was their 17th victory in 21 matches this season.

Another Canterbury team who are runaway leaders, the 3rds, won 3-1 at fourth-placed Cliftonvil­le in Kent Division 1. The 4ths, in the same division, shared a nine-goal thriller with Herne Bay 2nds, going down 5-4. In Kent Open Premier B, both Canterbury teams suffered defeat. The 5ths were beaten 4-2 at home by Herne Bay 3rds, while the Griffins, also at home, lost 4-0 to Old Williamson­ians 3rds. The Squires drew 2-2 at Holcombe 5ths in Kent Open Division 1, Finn Murphy scoring twice. Canterbury Friars lost 1-0 at home to Maidstone 5ths in Kent Division 3. Brian Hurlow was player-of- the-match. Canterbury ladies’ 1sts lost 1-0 at home to Trojans in National Division 1 South.

■ Hockey in Kent has joined the list of sports disrupted by the coronaviru­s outbreak.

The Kent Hockey Associatio­n have requested all clubs postpone fixtures until at least April 15, after England Hockey, the governing body, suspended national hockey activity.
