Customers can queue in their cars when it rains

New rules from Tesco as fast food giants start to reopen

-

Customers doing their essential shop at Tesco could queue in their cars in wet weather. Currently shoppers line up two metres apart outside store entrances, but supermarket bosses are now introducing new measures to keep customers dry. Car park marshals may also be on hand to help people park up in specific spaces.

Tesco hopes the move will help protect shoppers from the cold while also adhering to social distancing rules.

New guidelines published on the supermarket giant’s website state: “If it’s raining or particularly cold, we may ask you to stay in your car to queue – we’ll let you know when you can come in.

“To help limit the number of people in-store, when you arrive, we may help you park your car.” The company is prioritising the elderly and most vulnerable for one hour between 9am and 10am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Healthcare workers have a dedicated hour every Tuesday and Thursday, as well as an hour before checkouts open on

Sunday. Tesco boss Dave Lewis “just about everything” in the business has changed since the outbreak, with the public shopping how they used to 10 or 15 years ago.

He says customers were buying twice as much in April than on average.

Meanwhile, Greggs has become the latest high street retailer to put forward plans to start trading.

It comes after firms such as B&Q have reopened their doors to shoppers, while John Lewis has said it hopes to reopen all its shops next month.

Proposals from retailers came after Boris Johnson urged the public to stay at home in order to avoid a second peak in infections.

Firms such as Burger King, Pret a Manger and KFC have already reopened some sites for takeaway and delivery.
