Misbehaviour not ‘tolerated’
The police say any anti-social behaviour through excessive drinking will not be tolerated this weekend. Canterbury City Council, which is also urging people to behave responsibly, says Saturday is a “very important next step” in reopening the district and getting the local economy back on track. “We hope lots of people will come out, spend their cash and enjoy our fantastic pubs and restaurants, all the while behaving in a responsible and safe way in line with the government’s guidance,” said a spokesman. “All councils and the emergency services are aware there is likely to be increased footfall in city and town centres, and there is plenty of work taking place behind the scenes to manage this.
“We know from the discussions we have had with businesses that they have been preparing for this day for many weeks and have taken the steps they needed to in order to operate in line with the ‘Covid-secure’ guidelines.
“In many cases this will have involved considerable investment in order to show their customers they can return with confidence. All they need now is to get people back through the door.
“We recognise the enormous effort this has entailed, and we will continue to help them get back to trading with advice and help where required.”
Kent Police Chief Inspector Elena Hall said: “We understand that people will want to visit bars and pubs this weekend and we want everyone to have fun. “However, it is important to remember that coronavirus is still a serious risk to health and certain restrictions remain in place. “Our officers are working closely with the night-time economy and will support lawful, wellrun premises, to ensure businesses thrive while keeping the public safe. “Most drinkers are responsible, but we know some people will drink to excess and become vulnerable to harm or indeed cause harm to others. “Anti-social and criminal behaviour will not be tolerated and those responsible will still be dealt with despite social distancing measures.”
