Calls for cross-city bike network
The drive to encourage more cycling and walking around the district is gathering pace with calls for a dedicated cross-city network for bikes.
It follows a virtual conference of enthusiasts who have produced a wishlist to submit to the city and county councils as more government funding is released.
The contributors to the debate included representatives from east Kent cycling and environmental groups, as well as the Canterbury Society and the Local Democracy Forum. They believe the initiative will not only facilitate more cycling but also help cut Canterbury’s C02 emissions, which will support the city council’s own target.
Kent County Council has been allocated just over £8 million by the Department for Transport to invest in walking and cycling initiatives “to embed new behaviours while promoting the positive effects of safe and sustainable active travel.”
