Great weather on finals day
Canterbury Bowling Club hosted their annual Matthew Allen Men’s Pairs competition last week.
They were blessed with great weather for their finals day on Saturday. After a difficult and challenging season, it was fantastic to get some of their competitions played in a safe environment for all concerned.
Dean Ellis and Mike Talbot defeated Ian Hopkins and Tony Dobson 13-8 in the 11-end final of the Matthew Allen Competition, both teams had finished unbeaten in the earlier round robin stages.
Eight of the usual 12 competitions were able to take place during the season, with only the over-65 singles, Ladies 2 wood pairs, Handicap and Championship not taking place.
In a fantastic game, June Mitchell and Malcolm Nicholson defeated Leah Bamford and Mike Fisher 22-16 in the mixed pairs final. Ron Goodwin and Dean Ellis completed a 2-0 sets victory (9-4, 8-2) over Dixie Duricki and Alan Cornfoot in the Men’s 2 wood Drawn Pairs final.
The club’s very own NHS hero, Mandy Catt, was victorious over Alison Macdonald in the Ladies Challenge Cup (Novice singles) with a 21-9 win while Ian Hopkins defeated Andy Ferguson 21-12 in the Men’s Court Cup (novice singles). Dixie Duricki picked up his first winners’ trophy with a great 21-15 win in the Men’s Handicap competition while Yvonne Gambrill defeated defending champion Sue Close 16-10 in the ladies 2 wood singles competition. Joe Vandepeer ended Cornfoot’s quest for a fourth successive Men’s 2 wood singles title with a hotlycontested 15-14 victory. Finally, Jeff Vane gained revenge over Tony Dobson in a repeat of the 2018 Men’s Championship final in a fantastic game, which ended in a 21-17 win for Vane.
