New Labour leader vows to fight for ‘real democracy’

-

The Labour group on the city council has elected a new leader in Cllr Dave Wilson, who says his first job will be to resist the Conservative’s controversial bid to create a cabinet administration.

He was appointed unopposed at a meeting of the group this week and takes over the reins from Cllr Alan Baldock, who has been leader for the last seven years.

Cllr Wilson said: “Now that I’m fully retired, I’ve got more time to dedicate to council business, which is almost a full-time job in itself.

“In particular, we will fight this undemocratic system the Conservatives want to put in place and for the future of the city centre market, which is under threat.

“The local elections results, winning Canterbury City South and North, as well as Westgate ward, were very encouraging and shows there is quite a strong anti-tory feeling out there. “We will be holding this council and any undemocratic process to account and having a higher profile.”

Cllr Baldock, who works for UK Power Networks, said: “With more work and family commitments, I thought it was time to hand over to someone else and Dave has the time and experience to take on the many issues the council and district face. But I shall still be very active in my ward in Northgate and giving Dave and the group all my support.”

Cllr Jean Butcher has stepped down as deputy leader, but remains chairman of the local party, and her place has been taken by Cllr Val Kenny.
