James is just champion!

-

James Lambton was crowned Canterbury Golf Club’s ‘champion of champions’ when he won the Powers Cup on Sunday.

The event was limited to individual trophy winners from the 2020 season and James was delighted to add his name to the Powers Cup honours board four years after his father, Mark Lambton, won it.

Lambton, who won by one shot from Simon Leggatt, said: “It’s nice to be just underneath him on the same board, that was the highlight really.

“I didn’t start very well and I wasn’t in trouble either, I was just hitting bad shots. The whole round was just kind of okay, nothing special but nothing too disastrous.

“That birdie [a 30 feet chip in at the 12th] changed my momentum, I only dropped one shot in the next four holes and I’m very glad to have won it from that field because they’re all brilliant golfers, they’re in it because they won something, so they’ve got to be good.”

Canterbury’s Invicta League side have promotion and the Division Two title within their grasp as they head into the final round of matches.

They won 3-2 at rock bottom North Foreland on Saturday to regain the league leadership and are guaranteed promotion if they win their final match at Kings Hill next Saturday, but even a narrow defeat may be good enough.

Mark Lambton and Chris Sherwood claimed a 2&1 win while Mike Cunningham and Andy Brockman got up and down for par at the 18th to save a half before skipper Brandon and Paul Davis won 3&1 after trailing one down after nine.

Jon Warman and Alan Bundock had to hold on for a half after losing balls at the 15th and 16th while the final pairing of Waldemar Kalinowski and Jamie White were beaten 3&2.

Canterbury’s Richard Wallis bogeyed the par four 18th hole to finish tied for second place, one Stableford point behind the winner, in Thursday’s Kingswood GC Charity Pro-am at Tadworth, in Surrey.

David Divers beat his previous best score from the white competition tees by two shots, with a gross 83, net 66, for a winning 41 points in Wednesday’s Men’s Stableford.

Divers won by two from Richard Askham while David Gregory was third.

The winning golfer said: “I’ve scored a gross 83 before but that was off the yellow tees, so I’m really pleased. I started off with five pars and it was only careless, loose shots that stopped the round being even better.”

Ann Lake scored a gross 93 (net 73) to win Saturday’s Ladies’ Mount Harvest Cup win by one from Club President Ali Kingston. Elizabeth Carlotti took third.

Lake said: “I was pleased but surprised because there were a lot of good golfers playing and I thought somebody would come in under 70.

“My highest score was a seven and I had a birdie so I played pretty steadily actually, even when I got into a bit of trouble.”

Val Binns recovered from a seven on the par three second to win Wednesday Ladies’ Pollard Cup with a net 70, on count back from Fran Fearn. Jen Rutherford was third.
