Gran ‘blown away’ as generous donors help save dog’s life

A grandmother says she is stunned by the generosity of strangers who helped her poorly dog get an urgent blood transfusion.

Three-year-old shih tzu Boo Bear, from Chilham near Canterbury, is battling bone marrow cancer, causing her red blood cell count to plummet.

But her adoring owner Alison Haywood has already used up all her insurance money and maxed out credit cards on Boo’s treatment, since her diagnosis in September.

The grandmother-of-six was left desperately trying to raise £1,500 to cover a blood transfusion, in a last-ditch attempt to save her.

But after her Gofundme appeal was publicised on the Gazette’s sister website, Kentonline, generous readers rushed to donate and the target was smashed within just 24 hours.

“It was a god-send,” said Ms Haywood.

“Within 24 hours we had enough for the transfusion. I took her straight for blood tests, she had the transfusion and I got all her medication.

“I am blown away by the generosity of everybody - people that I don’t even know. It’s just amazing. She’s a lucky doggy.”

Boo is now back home and is doing well.

“It’s almost like we’ve got our old Boo back,” said Ms Haywood. “She’s doing her funny little tap dances, and it’s lovely to see she’s got a nice pink tongue and her gums are pink.”

Boo is now on new medication for her bone marrow cancer, which could save her life.

But Ms Haywood says the treatment could take months to kick in.

In the meantime, Boo will need regular blood tests costing £157 a time, and may need another transfusion if her red blood cell count dips.

“Although the blood transfusion was very successful this time, the red blood cells will still die off within four to six weeks,” said Ms Haywood.

“We hope and pray that Boo Bear responds to the new treatment by then.”

Ms Haywood says things will hopefully improve in the New Year, when Boo will be eligible for another insurance payout.

“She is the most adorable little girl – she’s just lovely,” she said.

“I just have to try everything I can. If Boo was 10 or something I’d think ‘OK she’s had a nice little life’. But she’s only three. She’s only a baby.”

Boo’s fundraiser remains open, with unused funds going to animal charities.
