18th birdie burden ends

-

Phil Myers putted well as he scored his maiden birdie at the 18th hole to cap victory in last Wednesday’s men’s Midweek Stableford at Canterbury Golf Club.

Myers could even afford a scoreless seventh hole and 17th hole as he racked up 40 points to win by three from Robert Hollidge.

Jeremy Hewlett scored 34 over the 17 open holes to take third on countback from Richard Hinds inafieldof35.

Myers also had eight pars, four bogeys and two doubles as he scored 21 points on the front nine and 19 on the back eight.

He joked: “The putts were very kind to me - the hole got in the way!”

Hollidge scored a hefty 24 points in a level-par outward half with a birdie at the eighth but could add only 13 more on the back eight. Myers added: “I’m delighted and the highlight was definitely the 18th. I don’t think I’ve scored a birdie there before.”

Alyson Wreford and Sarah Wetherell scored crucial threepoint pars at the difficult 11th and 17th holes for victory in last Wednesday’s ladies’ Pairs American Greensomes Stableford. Wreford and Wetherell scored four pars, seven bogeys, five scoring doubles and one no-return over 17 holes for 32 points.

They won by two from June Edney and Charlotte Launois, who held off third-placed Diane Plommer and Claire Wilson on countback in a field of 10 pairs.

Wreford said: “We were very pleased but to get three points on those two difficult par threes pretty much won it for us.

“We were steady, we dovetailed well but the conditions were tough, it’s difficult to trust your game in the mud.”

Christopher Fuller scored his best round of the year to win Monday’s Seniors’ Stableford.

Fuller totalled two pars, 11 bogeys, three doubles and one no-return for 35 points to win by one from Michael Wilson.

Wilson scored a birdie at the second to help take second by a point from Terry Martin, who held off Myers and fifth-placed Trevor Kelly on countback.

Amos Brazier christened his birthday clubs when he scored his first hole-in-one on Sunday morning.

Joint junior captain Brazier, who plays off a five handicap, was surprised with a new set of Mizuno JPX irons from dad David and mum Louise in the pro shop on his 15th birthday the previous Wednesday, having expected them for Christmas.

With Sunday’s men’s Hallet Cup Winter League round having been cancelled because of the severe weekend weather, he tried them out on a virtually deserted course and was overjoyed to score his maiden ace at the fifth.

Although he was playing on his own, Brazier Facetimed his dad as he was walking up to the hole, hoping against hope it had gone in and they shared the moment.

Then later, they went back to the fifth to picture the scene for posterity.

He said: “It was into the wind, the tee was all the way back and the flag was at the back of the green, so it was 180 yards and playing about 190.

“I hit my new 4 iron and I couldn’t have hit it any better.”
