Mark Lambton and Wal Kalinowski scored a superb two-under-par gross 65 for 43 Stableford points to win Canterbury’s 17-hole rescheduled fourth round of the men’s Hallet Cup Winter League on Sunday.

The win saw Lambton and Kalinowski surge into title contention but, heading into the eighth and final round this Sunday, only three league points separate the four leading teams. Scott Lindsay and Michael Longmore finished eighth on the day to climb from sixth to second, just two points behind leaders Chris Sherwood and Connor Bundock.

Pete Johnson and John Shiel remain in third while Lambton and Kalinowski began 30 points behind and although still fifth they cut their deficit to 12, Sherwood and Bundock making a bogey at the last to finish 13th on countback.

With the 12th hole shut, Kalinowski had birdies at the first, second and fourth holes and Lambton birdied the eighth as they reached the turn with 26 points from a four-under-par gross 32.

Despite dropping shots at the 10th and 15th, they added a further 17 on the back eight to win by three from Sam Cliff and Derek Horne.

Paul Stewart and John Hardy scored 39 for third on countback from Alan Moore and Tony Mcintyre. Kalinowski said: “The last round is going to be interesting. There are about five teams who are very close and, with a good score, any of us can win it. “We were delighted to win. We both played very well but it was all about our short game, the chipping and putting was fantastic.” Sherwood won his first competition since his junior days at Canterbury when he scored 39 points from a one-over-par gross 68 to land Thursday’s 17-hole Club Midweek Stableford. The small field of 12 was buffeted by southerly squalls, rain showers and even a 10-minute hail blizzard. But Sherwood scored a oneover-par 37 for 20 points on the front nine before birdies at the 11th and 13th, four pars and two bogeys saw him back with another 19 to win by five from new member Steve Robson. Robson had birdies at the first and ninth and two bogeys in a level-par outward nine and dropped only one shot on the back eight for a gross 68 and 34 points in only his second Canterbury competition. Geoff Plommer finished in third for the second competition running on 32. Sherwood celebrated his 35th birthday on Wednesday and said: “My mum, Diane, bought me a new hybrid for my birthday and I said, if I used it and won, I would say a big thank-you. I used it on the 17th and hit the green.

“This is my first win since 2003. I played golf as a junior for so many years that I was just golfed out, I stopped for 17 years and 2021 was my first year back, so it’s good to get a win as an adult.”

Val Lucas had a gross 73 to win Saturday’s 17-hole Ladies’ February Medal by one shot from Val Binns in a field of five. Ali Ord, Jen Rutherford and Fiona Cameron made good use of their extra ‘club’ to win last Wednesday’s Ladies’ 17-hole Piece of String Stableford competition.

The nine teams were allowed to use a piece of string the length of a normal putter to move the ball out of trouble or even into the hole without penalty and Rutherford, Ord and Cameron roped in an eagle for Rutherford at the third and all but one of five birdies to score 77 points. They won by four from Linda Pagdin, Judy Gray and Lesley Johnson who took second on countback from Binns, Beverley Mcneil and Lucas with 73. Michael Parrott earned his second seniors’ Stableford win in a month on Monday, scoring 37 points from the 17 open holes, with birdies at the seventh and eighth, to win overall by one from new seniors’ vice-captain David Spencer. Elizabeth Carlotti won Canterbury’s first Great British Summer of Sport (GBSS) event shortly after daughter Georgina had triumphed in the 17-hole junior Stableford competition on Saturday. Georgina won her second successive junior Stableford with a 14th-hole par and six bogeys in her haul of 36 points to win by four from Brinley Foster, who pipped Max Smith for second on countback. And mum Elizabeth triumphed in the GBSS 11-hole Stableford competition, which was linked to the England versus Wales Six Nations match and raised more than £300 for the London Asbestos Support Awareness Group (LASAG), club captain Scott Lindsay’s nominated charity for 2022, from a raffle. Elizabeth scored an up-anddown par for four points at the last and a total of 24 to win by one from Dean Petch and thirdplaced Aston Moy in a field of 21.

Only three points split the winners at a sun-drenched and immaculate Littlestone Warren Golf Course on Friday. Mick Bevan continued a run of good form with 39 points, nudging Nigel Stevenson into second with 38 points. Chris Snell took third on countback as a raft of members got into mid-30 point scores. One member who struggled to score and almost walked off was Alan Mountain. But encouraged by his group, he soldiered on to grab a nearest the pin, 2s club cash and the wooden spoon for last place.

Other spot prizes for nearest the pins on all par-3 holes were won by Simon Fowler, Chris Snell and new member Mike Davies.
