Captain makes Mark
New Canterbury GC club captain Mark Broadhurst’s team beat Neil Parsonson’s team 16.5-8.5 in the annual Captain versus President match on Sunday.
For good measure, Broadhurst also hit the longest drive of 242 yards in the captains’ drive-in. He said: “We had a great day. Well done to our captain’s team and here’s looking forward to a great year.”
Robert Hollidge won his second men’s Midweek Stableford in six weeks with a haul of 39 points in wind and mud for victory by four from second-placed Nick Shearman.
Hollidge played solid golf for 17 holes before finding bunker trouble at the last for his only no-score. He was out with 22 points from a birdie at the eighth, five pars and three bogeys and had nothing worse than a bogey on the back nine for another 17 before missing out at the 18th. Shearman was also home in twoover-par for 23 points with a birdie at the ninth but fell away on the back nine for another 12. Mike Parrott had 19 points on the front nine from a birdie at the fifth, two pars and six bogeys but was restricted to 15 on the back despite another birdie at the 14th to take third in a field of 25. Hollidge said: “I was just steady. “I was driving well, I hit every fairway off the tee and I never three-putted - you do those two things and you’re going to have a bit of a score. And I played the par 3s well. I had four threes and a two and that always helps the cause. “I seemed to be putting for par or birdie on every green and, until 18, there were no mistakes. I just never got into trouble.
“I knew I had a great score on the front nine but, in our group, Paul Newbury had 20 points and Mike had 19, so they were right up there as well.
“I knew I had to have a very steady back nine and I did up until 18. I just kept scoring on every hole.”
Ali Ord and Sarah Wetherell teamed up for only the second time to win last Wednesday’s 12-hole ladies’ Winter Cups Stableford greensomes competition. They scored a birdie at the eighth, five pars, four bogeys, one double and one no-score for 25 points to win by two from playing partners Val Binns and Jacqui Mount. Binns and Mount made a birdie at the first and had 19 points on the front nine before slipping up with a double at the 10th and by failing to score at the 12th. Angela Jones and Louise Fairburn were a further two points back for third in a field of 12 pairs. Wetherell said: “Greensome competitions are very nice, especially when you have Ali Ord as your partner.
“I think she used one of my drives but I did hole a putt from a long way for a birdie on the fifth. “We knew Val and Jacqui were playing just as well as we were, but Ali and I only really made a mess of the 11th. We were thrilled to win.’’
