Glory runs in the family

-

Canterbury Golf Club’s Catherine and Richard Hinds celebrated a family double after winning separate competitions on the same day. Catherine (h22) won last Wednesday’s ladies’ February Medal and Richard (h24) followed suit with victory in the men’s Midweek Stableford on a thawing course which caused problems for early starters when it was frozen. Catherine scored pars at the 1st and 18th in a gross 95, net 73, to win by nine shots from Jacqui Mount in a field of eight.

She was out in gross 46 and back in 49 while Mount (h10) included four doubles and a six at the 17th for gross 92, net 82.

Jen Rutherford (h7) scored six pars, five bogeys and seven doubles in a gross 90, net 83, for third place. Catherine said: ‘’It was like crazy golf the first four holes, the ball bounced off all over the place so how I managed that score I’ve no idea.

‘’My group went off last so we only had frozen four holes.

“When we were on the 2nd green we looked down at the 12th and it was pure white but when we got round to the 12th it was all green again.” Richard had three pars, four bogeys and two no scores for 20 points out and two pars, three bogeys and four doubles for 19 back to win by two from Anthony Arscott (h10). Arscott birdied the 14th and had seven pars and 10 bogeys in a gross 80 for 37 points and second place on countback from Lee Tidy (h6) and fourth-placed Graham Vaughan (h12) in a field of 44.

Hinds said: “Two wins in a row is pretty good for me, I’ve never done that before. I had two blobs, lost a ball and left some shots out there but I played better than last week apart from that.” Nigel Hylands and Aston Moy scored a birdie at the 9th for an outward two over par gross 38 and 21 points and came back in three over with a double bogey at the 10th and a birdie at the 14th for 20 more to win Sunday’s men’s February greensomes.

Their last six holes tally was just enough to win on countback from Richard Askham and Colin Shaxted (h11), Mark Baldwin and Manu Madekufamba (h10), and fourth-placed Kyle Bennett and Paul Stow (h9). Hylands said: ‘’It was very, very close today and we were really surprised to win.

‘’We got 21 points on the front nine and after a six for one point on the 10th we played really well coming home but thought we’d messed it up playing 18.” Di Plommer won at the first attempt after a six months break due to ill health, scoring 39 points to win Saturday’s Ladies’ Weekend February Stableford.

Plommer (h26) failed to score at the 1st but then racked up three pars, four bogeys and a two points double at the 4th for 22 points and added 17 coming in despite a further NR at the 18th.

She was the only player to beat par net in a field of nine and won by three from Lizza Berry (13) who scored six pars and 11 bogeys but came to grief at the 5th.

David Divers (16) was grateful to substitute player Mick Scott (h10) as they scored 44 points to win the Fifth Round of the Seniors’ Bill England Winter League on Monday. Scott birdied the 4th and 17th and made seven pars and three bogeys as he and Divers scored 22 points out to win on countback from Bob Green (13) and Phil Myers (16) in a field 32 pairs.

■ Last year’s club captain Scott Lindsay and Sandra Danton and her daughters Claire and Natalie presented a cheque for £8,549 to Denise Hodges of the London Asbestos Support Awareness Group (LASAG) at the club last Wednesday.

Lindsay raised the sum for LASAG as his chosen charity during his 15 months as captain.

Sandra was married to Canterbury member Colin Danton who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in the middle of 2021 and passed away last October.

Lindsay said: ‘’LASAG are a small charity who support asbestos-related cancer sufferers in London and the South East and Colin and his family received invaluable support from them.

‘’I would like to thank everyone, both members and guests, who contributed to raising the fantastic sum of £8,549. At the beginning of 2022, Colin and I said it would be great to raise £5,000, so to reach more than £8,500 is fantastic.’’
