Help for those with rare illness

-

Cardiomyopathy is a heart condition experienced by about one in 250 people in the UK . The disorder is caused by a problem with the heart muscle leading to a change in the structure and functioning of the heart. Consequently, the pumping action of the heart is reduced resulting in many debilitating symptoms such as fainting, breathlessness, palpitations, heart failure and in certain cases even death.

It differs from other heart conditions in that the abnormal heart muscle is not caused by blocked arteries, hypertension, problems with the heart valves or congenital heart disease. Genetics are thought to play a part, but in some cases the cause is idiopathic. Interestingly, it can affect

people of all ages. Cardiomyopathy UK is a specialist charity dedicated to improving the lives of people diagnosed with this condition. Unfortunately many people take years to get a diagnosis as their symptoms are often attributed to other causes.

Hence it is of utmost importance for all clinicians to be educated in this disease. Cardiomyopathy UK provides much-needed information for diagnosed individuals, their families and health professionals as well as putting on a yearly conference.

The charity has many support groups within the UK.

Last year in conjunction with another lady I helped establish the Kent Support group.

Its aim is to provide a relaxed environment for people affected by any type of cardiomyopathy. Carers are also welcome too. The group provides an opportunity to meet other people affected by the condition and share experiences.

We also invite speakers to talk on relevant topics.

It currently meets every six weeks on Zoom.

We are very keen to increase our numbers and reach out to as many people as possible within the Kent Cardiomyopathy community.

You would be made most welcome.
