Award winners meet VIP guest Club receive regional accolade

Winners were recognised at the annual Herne Bay Boccia Club presentation on Friday.

They welcomed the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Anne Dekker, who was accompanied by her consort Ken Dekker, as she presented the trophies. Shonie Fitch won the Herne Bay boccia champion’s shield, with Craig Foster coming second and thirdplaced Jacqueline Baxter honoured as well.

An additional trophy for most improved player was handed to Baxter and the runner-up was Laurel Cray. Herne Bay Boccia Club also welcomed Cllr Dan Watkins and Cllr David Thomas, while they were supported by members of the local catholic church, too, alongside guests. The club were founded by Derek and Sheila Appleton in March 2013 and, while Derek has since died, Sheila was presented with a basket of flowers as a thank-you for her work over the past 10 years.

They meet every Friday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at The Retreat Hall, Clarence Road, Herne Bay, but they will not be meeting next Friday. Boccia is a disability sport which is similar to indoor bowls or petanque, and it has been in the Paralympic Games since 1984.

Ocean Lake Triathlon have been named the best club in the south-east by Triathlon England.

The club, which have a base in Canterbury, were awarded the Regional Club of the Year 2023 honour by the judges for their commitment to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all members. Ocean Lake Triathlon are an inclusive club for adults and juniors.

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition from Triathlon England,” said Nicola Wignal, chairperson of Ocean Lake Triathlon.

“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our members, volunteers, coaches, and committee members who have all played a crucial role in making our club what it is today.

“We are very proud of our members and the strong sense of community that we have built together.”
