Sloborn

Walter Presents/channel 4

For those who don’t find Scandi-noir quite bleak enough, Sloborn returns for a second season of Scandipocalypse horrors. The series effortlessly combines the genres of coming-of-age drama and vast, sweeping disaster thriller as a deadly virus infects a small community living on the island of Sløborn, between Denmark and Germany in the North Sea. For 15-year-old Evelin (Emily Kusche), this nascent calamity was only one of many problems, as she dealt with the separation of her parents and her own pregnancy – her teacher is the father. As we return in season two, the island is a very different place. Many locals are dead and most of the rest have evacuated. Some remained, including Evelin, but they find self-sufficient living hard going.

Feud: Capote vs the Swans Disney+

This new series focuses on the acclaimed Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood author Truman Capote, and his friendships with a group of New York high society women he termed the “Swans”. A titular rift developed when, on writing his novel Answered Prayers, Capote included very thinly veiled versions of the women – and the secrets with which they trusted him. A fabulous cast includes Tom Hollander as Capote, alongside Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloe Sevigny, Calista Flockhart and Demi Moore.

DOCUMENTARY Our Living World Netflix

Netflix is gaining a reputation to rival the BBC’S famed Natural History Unit when it comes to nature programming. This one is bolstered by the presence of Cate Blanchett as narrator. The ambitious series illustrates the interconnectedness of all life on earth, a concept which is truly remarkable. One may never have imagined, for example, that the grazing patterns of reindeer in the Arctic might have any impact whatsoever on the daily lives of Botswana hippos. Not convinced? You know what to do.

SERIES Resident Alien Now

The third series of this comedy drama makes first contact on Sky Max and streams on Now this week. An otherworldly visitor continues to pose as doctor Harry Vanderspeigle in the town of Patience to better understand our species, supported at work by trusted assistant Asta Twelvetrees. Along with mayor’s son Max, Asta is one of the few people to know Harry’s true identity. They join forces to neutralise the threat posed by a human hybrid, who works for a secret organisation that hunts extraterrestrials.

Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver Netflix

The sequel to Zack Snyder’s 2023 space-opera epic finds Kora (Sofia Boutella of Hotel Artemis and 2017’s The Mummy fame) and the surviving warriors preparing to fight and defend their new residence, Veldt, from the evil and imperialistic Motherworld. Their presence alongside the remote moon’s impoverished farmers gives this instalment a the Magnificent Seven meets Seven Samurai vibe, but fans of the first film will be unlikely to worry too much about borrowed plots or recycled tropes: the burgeoning franchise is more than happy to borrow heavily from a galaxy of sci-fi and fantasy forebears. Snyder’s heavily visual style and muscular action sequences are what set Rebel Moon apart. Sir Anthony Hopkin and Ed Skrein also star.
