Boss hails Quinn as Hamilton Women legend hits 200 games

- PAUL THOMSON

Megan Quinn celebrated her 200th appearance for Hamilton Accies Women on Sunday and boss Robert Watson has heaped praise on a player he believes is not just club royalty, but a legend of Scottish Women’s football.

The defender joined Accies from Celtic Reserves back in 2015 and has racked up a club record number of outings.

Her milestone moment came in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Spartans, the side she also made her debut against, and while her big moment was somewhat dampened by the result and an own goal for the visitors’opener, Watson has paid tribute to the 29-year-old’s sterling service.

He said:“Megan has been an incredible servant to the club for the nine years she has been here.

“She has personally been through some highs and lows, with some tough times for her, but she’s always been Mrs Consistent.

“Even when her place has looked under threat at the club, she has knuckled down and worked hard to get herself back in.

“She is a brilliant leader and I can’t speak highly enough of her.

“With 200 appearances she has taken Hamilton Accies into the professional era and I do believe she is a Scottish Women’s Football legend, not just an Accies legend.

“Some clubs just suit some people. She has always been highly valued and it has been a good place for her to play football.

“As we are not full-time, we’ve always been understanding of people’s personal situations and we look after people.

“The fact Megan has stayed so long is a testament to what we do as a club.

“You don’t stay at a club that long without that mutual respect for one another.

“We are really lucky to have her and, hopefully, we keep her for another year and she gets her testimonial next season.”

Watson even insisted the own goal after 50 minutes of the clash at New Douglas Park showed her desire in an Accies jersey

He added:“In a weird way, the own goal epitomised here in the sense that she is doing everything she can to stop the ball going in the net.

“She has just been a bit unlucky with the deflection, but she won’t let it affect her.”
