NEW LEATHER FOR DISCOVERY 2

-

My Discovery ES model has grey leather electric seats. The driver’s seat is the most worn, and the rear seats are immaculate. My issue is that, as you would expect, the seat bases have seen better days and, although they haven’t dropped, they are sagged enough to be uncomfortable on a long drive. You may be aware that replacement seat bases are available from various outlets, including Exmoor Trim.

The problem is, leather seats are not normally stripped down and rebuilt. Are you able to advise what options are available to overcome this issue, and preferably retain the electrical seat adjustment? One option would be to get the same seats from a breaker’s yard, but those seats will have the same sagging problem. I wonder whether an option would be to put a replacement Land Rover seat on the existing rail and mechanism? Chris Andrew, Corsham

You are making a very common mistake in assuming that your seat cannot be repaired. You can buy new a foam and lower seat diaphragm from various suppliers, such as Exmoor Trim.

Fitting these new parts is not particularly difficult. You will have to remove the seat, disconnect the electric adjustment motors and, once these are out of the way, the strip down and rebuild of the seat is as simple as doing a cloth seat. You will find that the new parts come with fitting instructions.

The wear on the actual leather can also be made a lot less noticeable. There are leather repair kits available from companies such as Furniture Clinic (furnitureclinic.co.uk), which I have found to work very well. With patience, you can make the seats look like new and it is one of the most satisfying jobs you can do because it will make you smile every time you get in the car, or is that just me? Sam Clarke
