The Perfect Sunrise to Sunset Laning

-

THE PERFECT way to get maximum pleasure from a long summer day is to head for Norfolk, where it is possible to watch the sunrise over the sea on the east coast then enjoy a leisurely day’s greenlaning across the unspoilt East Anglian countryside before watching the sun set on the county’s west coast.

We recommend starting off along the North Sea coast near Great Yarmouth, from which it is a short drive into the unique wetlands of the Norfolk Broads National Park before exploring everything else that Norfolk has to offer.

There is a wealth of byways and UCRS that can be legally driven and, thanks to Norfolk’s gentle countryside, most are pretty unchallenging. But some get only light use, so bring along some secateurs to tackle stray brambles and branches you may encounter on neglected and overgrown sections.

Also arm yourself with the relevant OS mapping, either loaded on your GPS or in old-fashioned paper form. You’ll need OS Explorer 40, 238 and 250, or OS Landranger 134, 133 and 132.

If you’re worried about where you can drive, you’re in the right place because forward-thinking Norfolk’s Highways Department kindly provides an interactive map to show you all the county’s rights of way. Go to maps.norfolk.gov.uk/ highways/

You will be able to have loads of fun before ending the day at west-facing Hunstanton, Heacham or Snettisham to watch the sun go down over The Wash.
