GREAT NEWS that Dave Phillips has decided to spend a bit of money on welding to keep his 21-year-old Discovery 1 on the road. It is such a shame to see so many of these fine vehicles scrapped.

To put this into perspective, spending say £500 on welding to get it through its MOT for another year will cost a lot less than the depreciation more modern models will suffer in the same period of time. And the road tax will be a lot cheaper, too.

With all the daft talk about dirty diesels these days, I fear we could see another populist scrappage scheme by the UK government, which could condemn even more old Land Rovers to the scrapheap.

The moral of this story: if you are thinking of scrapping your Land Rover, weigh up all the pros and cons first. You may well decide that it would make sense to invest some TLC in the vehicle you already have. James Hillen Romsey, Hampshire
