FITTING THE WINDSCREEN

-

The old screen was cracked and pock-marked from road grit, so this new one (seen with protective edging) will improve vision.

The seal is one piece. The join (arrowed) will be fitted at top centre. The flap being lifted here will locate over the screen frame.

The seal is fitted around the glass. A cord is fed through this glazing tool and wrapped around the seal inside the frame groove.

The tubular end of the glazing tool is run along the frame groove in the seal while feeding the cord through the handle of the tool.

Here, the cord has been fully wrapped around the seal and the ends have been overlapped at the bottom of the screen (right of picture).

Before fitting the screen, the flanges of the windscreen frame are thoroughly lubricated using window cleaning fluid to help the seal slide in.

The screen with seal is now placed onto the outside of the screen frame without pressure, with the ends of the cord inside the vehicle.

Applying hand pressure outside, Steve pulls the overlapped cord ends outward, causing the middle of the seal lip to engage over the frame flange.

With the ends pulled out, each cord end is pulled sideways to its respective bottom corner while applying hand pressure on the outside of the screen.

To ease the seal around the left corner, Steve pulls the cord while moving his hand in an anti-clockwise rotation (clockwise for right-hand side).

Before seating the sides and top of the screen seal, the outside lip of the seal is assisted down by sliding this trim tool along under the lip.

The screen and seal assembly is then pulled firmly down, working along the top until the bottom edge of the seal is hard down onto the frame.

Now, still holding the screen from the outside, the cords are pulled up the sides, wound around the top corners and along the top edge.

With the seal now fitted all around the screen frame and the screen held securely, the seal lips inside and outside are checked for shape and fit.

Finally, a few sharp jolts using the palms of the hands ensures that the seal and screen are fully seated into the windscreen frame.
