Seventy and counting

Happy 70th Birthday Land Rover!

- Editor Patrick Cruywagen

As passionate supporters of all things Land Rover, we can be immensely proud of the fact that our favourite automotive brand is turning 70 on April 30. We live in uncertain times. Brexit looms large and the car industry is under pressure to produce greener and cleaner cars. Diesel has become a bit of a swear word in the UK and it is impacting new car sales.

Let us forget about all of that for a while for now is the time to put on our party shoes and celebrate one of the greatest automotive success stories of all time. Which is why we have put together this special commemorative issue just for you! Hopefully by now you have already plastered your free stickers all over your Land Rover.

The party kicks off on page 48 where David Phillips will take you on a walk down Solihull memory lane as he identifies 70 significant moments along the way. Then on page 60 we have drawn up a list of all the various 70th birthday celebration events taking place all around the UK and the rest of the world. While we will not be able to attend all of them we have reporters who will be covering the significant ones for us. Which ones will you be attending?

Finally I asked all our contributors to tell us about their favourite Land Rover and their first Land Rover experience. Mine involved flying head first through the windscreen of a Defender 110 while in the army.

The rest of show must go on though and you can read about our recent rainy mid-wales Greenlaning adventure on page 76. There is also a report on my recent weekend in Moscow where I took a tour of the town in a Series IIA. Read more on page 66. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we did putting it together.
