THE CONVERSION

-

“IT’S really easy to overdo it when you build a camper/overlander,” says Kasper. “If you think about what sort of trips you will do, you most likely won’t need 100 litres of fresh water on the roof, nor enough solar to power a small village. “I have an Ikamper Skycamp x4 roof tent with a hard shell, which is where I sleep when it isn’t too stormy. I also have a bed inside the car, for when the weather is too harsh. “I built a storage unit, which is easy to take in and out by yourself, with drawers that pull out. This is where my kitchen is. Making food outside always takes more work than back home, but I started to make better food than I ever did in the apartment. One summer evening I made sushi from scratch with a cold beer, just to prove that camp food does not necessarily need to be boiled in a bag. “The Disco 4 has a factory-fitted Nordic heating pack, with a Defa heater where I wanted to place a second battery. So I found another way to acquire power in the car, with a portable power pack from Goal Zero – a Yeti 400, to be precise. It has a built-in battery, converter, outlets and so on; I can pick it up and bring it into the roof top tent, to the beach, or a cabin without electricity. On top of the car I also have two solar panels to charge the battery, which is also charged from the car while driving. “There’s a 15 litre water tank, plus storage for soft drinks, sparkling water or beer. There are usually nearby towns where I can take showers. Even though I live in a car, I clean up well! “I fitted LED lights around the whole car, making it easier for setting up/packing down camp, especially during the polar nights we have in the Arctic, with no direct sunlight for over a month. “I have pretty standard wheels, suspension and bars under the tent. But it’s a rolling build, so more stuff will come.”
