Land Rover Monthly

Unprecedented times

- Patrick Cruywagen, Editor

WHENEVER Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, addresses the nation he constantly refers to these ‘unprecedented times’ and he is right. Who would ever have thought that they would live through a pandemic? One that is slowly destroying our economy, halted all but emergency and essential travel and is killing thousands by the day. For now fortunately our printing presses are still running, our distributors are still getting the magazine out to the stores that are still open and the good old Royal Mail is still delivering subscriber copies. We were very mindful when putting this issue together. What would you want to read when faced with a lockdown when all you have is your family and your Landy? So to that end we have tried to provide you with content that will inspire, motivate and force you into doing things you never thought you had time for. My hope is that this issue gives you a sense of purpose at a time when it is very easy to feel all at sea. I know that some of you reading this will be having a tough time. Maybe you or a loved one works for the NHS? Maybe someone you know has died or is suffering from the coronavirus? Maybe you are worried about money? The one thing that I do know is that when the Land Rover community and British people are faced with challenging and unprecedented times, we step up to the plate, pull together and make things happen or better. That irrepressible bulldog spirit gets us through anything and everything and I have no doubt whatsoever that it will do so again this time. I am a positive person; I know that one day we will be able to go laning in Wales or camping in Norfolk again. Then once things settle and normalise in Europe and further afield, those places too will once again feature on our travel radars. If anything, we will be more appreciative of being able to move and socialise freely. Though I suspect that life as we once knew it will never be the same again, our generation will forever be mindful of a fast-spreading virus like COVID-19. I would like to thank everyone who works for our wonderful NHS. You are our frontline in this fight. Thanks must also go to everyone else who cannot work from home, thereby exposing themselves to potential risks. The postman, supermarket staff, carers, bus driver and all other key staff. You are our heroes during these unprecedented times.
