Land Rover Monthly

LRM Classics launch issue

- Patrick Cruywagen, @busheditor

LAST month we gave you a spanking new website plus the launch issue of

LRM’S Drive 25. This month we bring you a new section in the magazine, LRM Classics. And, is there a better way to launch LRM Classics than having a Series I leading a little convoy? Thanks to the best Land Rover photographer in the world, Nick Dimbleby, for doing the feature for us. Read more on page 36 about Land Rover collector Denys Shortt’s daily dilemmas.

Gary Pusey is the new LRM Classics Editor and regular readers will know that he is the perfect man for the job. What Gary does not know about the history of Land Rovers is probably not worth knowing.

I am not even going to attempt a definition of what is considered a classic Land Rover. My Defender was first registered in 1998, one of only nearly 1500 produced by the factory with BMW M52 engines. If you consider that they made over two million Defenders then it probably does fall into the rare category but

I’m not convinced that it is a classic, just yet. Maybe when I am an old fart and I hand the keys and the Defender over to my son, then it might have achieved classic status like me.

To read LRM Classic’s definition of a classic Land Rover turn to page 55. It will give you a good idea of the great content to expect in this new special section of the mag.

Judging by the feedback we’ve had regarding our September cover feature, I think we can safely say it was fairly well received. It created healthy debate and I am with old Defender fans on this one – it is too early to judge if the new Defender would be reliable and even robust enough for an event like the Camel Trophy. The bottom line is we try and write cover stories that no other magazine has yet done: how does the new Defender measure up to the old Defender? We try and answer the questions our readers are currently asking. Enjoy the October issue.
