north-west for £54,560. The list price for a brand-new example is £52,110.

It isn’t just a northern thing. Down in the south-east, another new Defender 110 – this time a silver D200 on a 20 plate with 500 miles on the clock was advertised for £50,755. The list price for a brand-new one of similar spec is £45,600.

Posing as an interested customer, I called the dealer, who said that the asking price didn’t exceed the manufacturer’s list price for the vehicle and its various extras. Agreed, most customers do push up the cost of a new car by adding a few extras – which in case of Land Rovers are usually very pricey indeed – but the golden rule of buying and selling secondhand is that you don’t get your money back on optional extras when you sell the vehicle on. Those extras are regarded as little more than incentives to get the punter to buy that model rather than a similarly-priced but lower-spec version.

Obviously, if you are impatient and can’t wait to get your hands on a new Defender, you won’t be put off by these inflated prices for secondhand models. If you are thinking of splashing out on a secondhand new Defender 110 diesel, the benefits include fuel consumption of around 30 mpg, 0-60 mph in 8.8 to 10 seconds (depending on model), bhp around the 200 mark and a top speed of well over 100 mph. On the downside, road tax will cost £475 a year, and insurance in groups 32 to 35 will cost you too – plus, of course, it isn’t a traditional Defender.

If I was a patient man with zero brand loyalty and £50,000 to spare, I’d probably wait until the new Ineos Grenadier appeared. After all, it appears to be much more like old
