MODELS: Defender 90 and 110. TOOLS: General workshop tools and ball joint splitter.

PARTS & COSTS: Front drive halfshaft long, (right-hand) LR072070, £110 to £633 (OEM £180); front drive halfshaft short, (left-hand) LR072069, £100 to £600 (OEM £170); driveshaft hub nut and washer, LR024151, £4.

WORK SAFELY:

• Unless the work is being done on a suitable vehicle lift (which is the safer and easier option) support the vehicle securely on suitable axle stands and place secondary supports underneath. Confirm that any residual movement of the air suspension cannot dislodge the vehicle. Ensure the vehicle cannot roll.

• Wear protective gloves or barrier cream, and wear eye protection when underneath where there is a risk of debris falling from the vehicle underside.

• If doing this work, adhere to the procedures set out in the Land Rover workshop manual, and the recommende­d tightening torques for the specific vehicle.

• Consult a garage if unsure of any work.
