2020 Historic Motoring Awards winner

-

THE winners of the Historic Motoring Awards 2020 in association with Octane magazine have been announced and the Car of the Year was none other than ‘Oxford’ battling it out against some of the most important cars in motoring history from prototypes and painstaking recreations to motorsport icons. The 86in station wagon – one of two Land Rovers to complete an overland expedition from London to Singapore in 1955-56 – was recovered as a wreck from Saint Helena in the South Atlantic by enthusiast Adam Bennett a few years ago, and sympathetically restored. In late 2019 it drove 11,800 miles from Singapore to London, in a recreation of that pioneering trip made famous in a BBC TV series produced by the young David Attenborough. ‘Cambridge’, the other half of the pairing was sadly later scrapped, so it’s great to see this true hero receive some recognition. We were there to welcome them home after their Last Overland expedition and you can read about it in the February 2020 issue.
