LRM GROUP TEST VERDICT

-

CHOOSING a tap and die set best suited to working on a Land Rover certainly depends on the age of the vehicle, as older Series models never used metric fixings. The eventual transition to metric means retro-fitted items could be either type, making restoration and repair more taxing, so these kits are better suited to later vehicles. All five cover the most popular threads and pitches, some more comprehensively than others so spend your money on a kit you’ll get the most value from, depending on the intended nature of its use. If you don’t have the correctly sized drill bits, factor in their purchase if buying a set without them.

The Clarke set is the only hybrid set featuring metric, UNF and BSP threads. This makes its scope wider in one sense but narrower if you don’t need the non-metric items. That said, it would be ideal for late Series III owners. It offers out of the box use for tapping holes thanks to the matching drill bits and is ideal for cleaning up existing threads.

Silverline’s set offers a commendable 16 metric sizes for most tasks though it doesn’t feature matching drill bits. The die holder is worth a mention as it still offers good leverage when the handles are removed, and is ideal for threads in situ. The solid dies suggest it’s best suited for cleaning up existing threads.

Draper’s set includes eight popular size split dies, taper and plug taps for more specific tasks and matching drill bits. As such it’s excellent value.

Sealey’s set features split dies with machined lead-ins and matching drill bits for the taper and plug taps.

Laser’s set features solid dies and taper taps suggesting it’s better suited to more experienced users, but don’t be put off. It’s well-engineered and arguably features the best case for regular use.

There is very little to separate the Draper and Sealey sets including price, and either is recommended. Laser’s set will delight experienced and pro users who don’t need plug taps or split dies. Silverline’s set is almost identical in scope to Laser’s and carries a lower price. For first-timers, the broad church Clarke set offers everything to get started immediately and at a keen price. If you don’t need the UNF sizes but need the drills opt for the Draper or Sealey as they share the DIY honours.
