Crochet coasters in summery shades

These easy to make crochet drink coasters bring a rainbow of summer shades to the table

materials

Scraps of worsted-weight cotton yarn in 6 graduated colours Scraps of sport-weight cotton yarn in 1 colour for edging 3.5mm hook 2.25mm hook

Apretty set of coasters is made using graduated shades of colour in the same tone, with a contrasting trim. Using cotton yarn ensures the texture remains smooth and sharpens the detail. It also creates enough thickness to protect table tops from heat. The pattern incorporates simple stitches in a circular form and as many coasters can be crocheted as needed in whichever colour is chosen.

To make a coaster

Using 3.5mm hook and colour of choice, ch4, join ends with sl st to form ring.

Round 1:

ch3 (counts as first tr), 11tr into ring, join with sl st into top of ch3 at beg of round (12sts).

Round 2:

sl st into next sp between tr of previous round, ch3 (counts as first tr), 1tr into same sp, *miss next st, 2tr into next sp, rep from * to end, sl st into top of ch3 at beg of round (24sts).

Round 3:

sl st across next sts and into next sp, ch3 (counts as first st), 2tr into same sp, ch1, *miss 2sts, 3tr into next sp, ch1, rep from * to end, sl st into top of ch3 as beg of round (36sts).

Round 4:

sl st across next 2sts and into next ch1sp, ch3 (counts as first st), 3tr into same sp, ch1, *miss 3sts, 4tr into next ch1sp, ch1, rep from * to end, sl st into top of ch3 at beg of round (48sts).

Round 5:

ch1 (counts as first dc), 1dc into each st and ch1sp to end, sl st into ch1 at beg of round (60sts). Fasten off yarn. Using the smaller 2.25mm hook and edging yarn, join yarn to any st of previous round.

Round 6:

ch1, 1dc into first st, ch2, 1htr into base of dc just worked, miss next st, *work [1dc, ch2, 1htr] into base of dc just worked, miss next st, rep from *, ending last rep with sl st into ch1 at beg of round. Fasten off yarn. Weave in loose ends.
