AUTUMN FAVOURITES

-

Tom and Jenny Williams suggest the following plants for glorious autumn colour:

Eupatorium maculatum (Atropurpureum Group) ‘Riesenschirm’ These clump-forming architectural plants produce large, densely-packed clusters of blooms in shades of purple in autumn, making them invaluable for late flowering and loved by pollinators as a result. The fluffy seedheads can be left to bring interest to the garden in winter. Height 7ft (2.1m); spread 3ft (91cm).

Crab apple, malus ‘Evereste’ A good choice of tree for smaller gardens, the clusters of small, tart apples ripen in colour to orange-red in autumn. The fruit can be used to make delicious crab apple jelly. Height 23ft (7m); spread 20ft (6.1m).

Mount Fuji cherry, prunus ‘Shirotae’ The scarlet foliage of this elegant tree provides a striking contrast with the burnished beech hedge, creating a colourful focal point in The Laundry garden. Height and spread 26ft (7.9m).
