BUNDLES OF JOY
As with all dogs, pregnancy lasts for approximately nine weeks, towards the end of which a dam will begin to create a nest. Twenty-four hours before whelping, her temperature will drop, and she will appear restless. On average 10–12 puppies will be born, although litters of 16 and 17 have been known.
After the birth, the dam may not feel like eating much for two to three days, but should then be given extra food and be well looked after as she feeds her pups. Initially, the newborns require little extra care, although a heat pad should be placed in the pen to ensure they are warm enough. At approximately four weeks, weaning should begin. Puppies should be fed four times a day at first, dropping to twice a day by the time they are a year old.
A good quality, shop-bought puppy food will suffice, with the occasional treat, such as raw carrot or pears with the core removed, being introduced later.
