CASCADING JEWELS

-

String of pearls, Senecio rowleyanus Native to arid habitats in southern Africa, this succulent has long stems that are covered with oval, pea-like leaves, each with a semi-translucent line, which allows the leaf to absorb light for photosynthesis. It is a member of the aster family, and if conditions are right, it will produce small, fluffy, daisy-like flowers that are said to smell of cinnamon. The plant is toxic, so should be kept away from children and pets. Trails to 24in (61cm); spread 8in (20cm).

Conditions: 21-24°C; 13-16°C in winter. It is best positioned in bright light, but not direct sunshine, with moderate humidity. This plant can be grown in a shallow container, as it does not have a substantial root ball, and this will avoid the roots sitting in damp soil.

Watering: It is recommended to wait until the compost has dried out, then water from below by placing the pot in a shallow container of water for 10 minutes before removing and leaving to drain. This avoids the pearls sitting on damp compost, which can cause them to rot. During autumn and winter, the plant should only be watered when the leaves start to shrivel.

Feeding: Once a month between April and September, with a half strength cacti/succulent liquid plant feed.

Propagation: Stems are cut off approximately 4in (10cm) long, selecting those that have firm, plump leaves. The bottom leaves are removed, and the cutting is left for a couple of days to allow the base to callus over. The stem is then inserted into cactus compost, with added perlite or grit. The soil should be kept moist by lightly misting the surface, rather than using a watering can.
