ST Mary’s Primary School got a true insight into the Battle of Largs and the Viking influence in the town.

The youngsters visited the acclaimed attraction, the Vikingar! experience, in the town and got to live life as a Viking for a day.

It was hailed as an excellent trip, with the pupils meeting Viking Thora, who transported them back in time to Norway, giving them a tour of her Viking home and a fascinating insight into their way of life.

The children then entered the Hall of the Gods and were introduced to the different Viking gods by Odin himself !

After that they had the opportunity to discuss the different materials Vikings used for their clothes and various pieces of equipment such as the keys for their house, tools, weapons, helmets and jewellery.

The children also learned how Vikings used plants, vegetables and insects to make dye for their material. Finally, everyone watched a very informative video about the Battle of Largs and had the opportunity to explore the Viking Hall of Knowledge.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and the school wish to thank Lesley Mccormack (Viking Thora) and staff at Vikingar for a great Viking experience.

Vikingar! is an exciting, interactive, hands on Viking and Scottish heritage and cultural centre, with real Viking storytellers, who invite you into their replica 8th century Norwegian Longhouse.

Pupils discovered the reasons why the Vikings left their homelands and were encouraged to try on the replica helmets and armour and check out the swords, shields and axes of the day.
