‘A spaceship crashed and aliens have left us a trail’

PUPILS were put on high alert when pieces of what was believed to be part of a spaceship fell onto their school field last week.

The items left a trail of debris on the playing field at St Leonard’s First School, Ipstones, as children went out to investigate.

But there was no need to worry as the scenario had been set up by teacher Sally Mellor as part of the school’s autumn term project on space.

Enthusiastic pupils ventured around the field looking for clues before drawing pictures and writing stories about the incident.

Head teacher Kelly Stanesby said: “This is a new approach to teaching. It created a lot of interest and got the children’s attention. The children will now be writing about it and then we will be having a series of events as it is part of our space project for this term.”

Mrs Mellor said: “I set the items up as part of our space project. It created a lot of enthusiasm from the children which was brilliant.”

Amelia Barks, six, said that they were going to try to put the crashed items back together, while Harry Nadin, eight, and Luca Stanesby said they saw white lines and thought an alien ship had landed on their school field.

Elodie Wells, seven, said: “I think a spaceship crashed. Aliens are very small and could get into the space ship.”

Alfie Hine, four, said he heard a loud bang like metal had fallen on the school roof. Fletcher Mellor, four, said: “I think a spaceship has crashed and one of the aliens has left a trail so that they can find one another.”
