Golden Lion hit late winner to see off Stags in close encounter

-

IT was a seven-goal thriller at Windmill Street where Golden Lion entertained Buxton Stags in the LEEK AND DISTRICT LEAGUE.

Lion started off brightly and should have been 1-0 in the first five mins. The high pressure paid off as Jermaine Leveridge opened and

Aaron Walker doubled soon after from close range. Pete Richardson reduced the deficit on the half-hour and James Gemmill levelled just before the break. Leveridge made it a brace to give Lion the lead, only for Jack Gregory to level again with quarter of an hour to go.

Lion captain Chris Burgess rose late to make it 4-3 with a great header in the 86th minute.

Prince of Wales made it three wins in a row with a convincing 8-0 win over Breaks FC.

Breaks defended well for the first quarter, but then Prince turned up the pace with goals from Jamie Pointon (23) and Eddie Ellis (39) followed by a brace from George Butcher just before the interval. The second half was much the same as Greg Johnson (67); Harry Davies (81), Ellis (85) and Tom Coates (87) doubled the score.

Bulls Head still seek their first points as they couldn’t get a grip on Waterhouses in the first half. Ash Cunningham was first to score in five minutes. Martin Hudson (28) hit the third either side of a Jimmy Mcmullen brace, the first a brilliant free-kick in the ninth and the second coming just before the break. Bulls Head were much better in the second half but couldn’t find the net and Adam Taylor scored Waterhouses’ fifth with 10 minutes to go.

Vale Hoppers enjoyed their trip to Leek returning with an 8-2 win over Breaks Athletic. Hoppers dominated the first half with goals from Zak

Oakes (8), Ben Ambage (20) and Zib Nyatito (44) to give them a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break.

Adrian Findlow gave Athletic some hope five minutes after the restart but by the hour Ben Ambage and Zak Oakes to put Hoppers 5-1 up. Findlow scored again on 65, but

Zak Oakes (65) and a Ryan Williamson double rounded off the 8-2 victory.

Two of the seasons’ new sides met at Birchall with AFC Wellington helping themselves to their first points by defeating Breaks United 6-3. Tom Brindley opened for Wellington in the eighth minute with Rob Cimino heading from a corner and Benji Rooke firing one in from the edge of the box.

Man of the match was Wellington’s Samuel Poole who scored a hat-trick with his third goal perfectly chipping the keeper. Josh Edwards, Macca Ray and Tyler Walwyn replied for Breaks.
