CATTLE numbers were up as producers look to reduce the numbers of mouths to feed for winter. Sheep numbers down perhaps because Lambs are not finishing as quickly as hoped.

The Store and Breeding Cattle amassed 488 head, a similar total to last week, some cattle definitely showing signs of the hard winter followed by a summer that had more sunshine than grass.

Top figures... Steers to £1,280, Heifers £1,140 and Bulls £1,310, Cow and Calf outfits £1,240.

The 97 Finished Cattle looked well sold with top figures of 264p and £1,630 as an indication of price levels the 41 Heifers averaged 195.9 pence.

In the OTM section there was an outstandin­g entry of 175 Cattle, reaching 200p and £1,840

per head. The overall average for a mixed sample was 118.4p.

104 Calves on offer with trade good, bulls to £355 and Heifers peaking at £345.

Sheep numbers were down on last week with only 1,122 Lambs forward. Top figures 216p and £95.76 per head. The SQQ average was 172.1p with the overall almost

identical at 171.4p. Finally, a decent crop of 775 Cull

Sheep. Ewes reached £104 with an average £58.85.

175 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – OVERALL AVERAGE 118.4P

A wonderful entry of Cows with all breeds, sizes and grades represente­d and selling to a full ring of buyers with the overall average up 4p on the week. Top Cow was a pure Blue from Steven Mills, Sheffield at 181p (£1437), with Chris Shenton in second spot at 176p (£1418). 19 Natives saw Devon’s to 165p, Angus to 155p.
